# 32 Short Morning Affirmations for an Honest Start

> Most morning affirmation lists ask you to announce something you do not believe yet at 7am, which is exactly when you are least able to fake it. These thirty-two are written to be sayable on an ordinary morning — closer to a plan than a declaration. The research on why that distinction matters is at the bottom of the page.

## How to use this list

Pick two. Not ten, and not the most impressive-sounding ones — the two you could argue for if someone challenged you on them. A line you half-believe is a line your brain spends the morning rebutting. The [gratitude affirmations list](/en-GB/affirmations/gratitude-affirmations) applies the same test to what you already have, rather than to how the day ahead will go.

Say them while you are doing something with your hands: filling the kettle, tying laces, opening a window. Attaching a sentence to a movement you already make every day is the difference between a practice and a plan to have a practice.

## When affirmations backfire

This is the part most affirmation lists leave out. In a [2009 study published in Psychological Science](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19493324/), participants who repeated the phrase "I am a lovable person" reported better moods afterwards if they already had high self-esteem — and *worse* moods if they did not. The line invited them to notice all the evidence against it.

That is not a reason to skip affirmations. It is a reason to pick believable ones, which is why nothing on this list claims you are extraordinary. "I can start slowly and still start" is hard to argue with. "I am unstoppable" is not. The [I am affirmations](/en-GB/affirmations/i-am-affirmations) list works under the same constraint, because an "I am" line is the exact grammar the 2009 study found could misfire.

The [self-affirmation research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23658751/) that does hold up tends to work differently: it asks people to reconnect with a value they already hold, rather than assert a trait they wish they had.

## Pair one line with three written lines

A morning affirmation sets what you look at. An evening entry records what you found. The pair works better than either alone, and the evening half is the one with the [experimental support behind it](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12585811/). On a day when none of that appeals, [three lines written on a genuinely bad Tuesday](/en-GB/stories/three-lines-on-a-bad-tuesday) is the evening half at its smallest.

Say your two lines in the morning. At night, write three specific good things that actually happened — the [three-good-things habit](/en-GB/blog/why-gratitude-journaling-works) is the whole practice, and [why the last thing you notice matters](/en-GB/blog/peak-end-rule-journaling) is the reason it goes at the end of the day rather than the start.

If a blank page is the obstacle, use [prompts for beginners](/en-GB/journal-prompts/for-beginners) instead. If Monday is the morning that gets you, [Monday quotes](/en-GB/quotes/monday-quotes) is the same idea in someone else's words, and [Monday journal prompts](/en-GB/journal-prompts/monday) turn it back into questions.

## FAQ

### Do morning affirmations actually work?
It depends on the gap between the line and what you already believe. A 2009 study found that repeating "I am a lovable person" improved mood for people with high self-esteem and worsened it for people with low self-esteem, because the statement invited them to argue with it.

### How many affirmations should I say in the morning?
Two or three you mean beat thirty you recite. Pick the lines from this list that you could defend if someone asked why, and leave the rest. A list is a menu, not a script.

### Should I say affirmations out loud or write them down?
Writing gives you something to return to, which repeating out loud does not. If you only have thirty seconds, writing three specific good things from yesterday tends to do more than saying three general things about today.

### When is the best time for morning affirmations?
Before the first notification. The point of a morning line is to set what you look at first, and that decision is already made for you once the phone is open.
